Argentina Legends — The Greatest Players Ranked
Two of the three or four best footballers who ever lived came from the same country, and Argentina still can’t agree which of them to put first. Maradona carried 1986 almost single-handed; Messi rewrote every record and then won the World Cup in 2022 to close the only argument anyone had left. Everything below them is a separate, quieter list.

Ranked on the components behind every Vikto card: honours, position-normalised impact, and recognition beyond the country’s own support. Di Stéfano’s placing reflects the Argentina career only — he later played for Spain, and his club rating lives with Real Madrid at 96.
Maradona or Messi?
The rating system would put them level, and that isn’t a dodge. Messi wins the honours column — a World Cup, a Copa América, eight Ballons d’Or — and the impact column on volume nobody will approach. Maradona takes iconicity outright, because 1986 remains the single most complete individual tournament in the sport’s history.
We’ve already run the numbers on this one: Messi’s Barcelona card is a 99, tied with Pelé for the highest rating in the game, and a Maradona card would arrive at 98 or 99. The full comparison is in Maradona vs Messi.
Passarella at five is the pick most lists get wrong — a defender who captained the 1978 win, scored 22 goals from the back, and is the only Argentine to appear in two World Cup-winning squads.
Is Argentina in Vikto?
Not yet, and it’s the most requested pool in the game. Messi is playable today through Barcelona at 99, and Di Stéfano through Real Madrid at 96 — but there’s no Maradona card anywhere, because building Argentina properly means a full 36-legend pool rather than adding one name.
That’s the standard every pool is held to: twelve attackers, twelve midfielders, twelve defenders, each rated on the same three components. Argentina is on the roadmap.

Who would be Icons?
Maradona and Messi, immediately and unanimously. Both clear the standard by a distance — players who’d make an all-time world XI rather than a national one.
Di Stéfano is the third, on a career that would be Icon tier in any pool he appeared in. Kempes and Passarella would be strong Legends in the low 90s, with Batistuta’s rating the one most likely to surprise: a striker whose numbers hold up against anyone on this list and whose recognition outside Argentina is higher than his trophy count suggests.
Where the pool runs deep
Attack, to a degree that would be a problem to select from. Maradona, Messi, Di Stéfano, Kempes, Batistuta, Di María, Sívori, Crespo, Agüero, Tevez, Higuaín and Caniggia fill twelve places before the difficult calls even start.
Defence is where an Argentina pool would be genuinely competitive rather than top-heavy: Passarella, Zanetti, Ayala, Ruggeri, Samuel, Otamendi, Romero and Perfumo make a deck with a high floor and no obvious standout. In a format where you win by taking two duels out of three, that flat shape rewards spreading a budget rather than spending it.
The names just outside
Hernán Crespo, Sergio Agüero, Carlos Tevez, Gonzalo Higuaín and Juan Sebastián Verón would all make a 36-card pool, and Ricardo Bochini — Maradona’s own answer when asked about his idol — is the name most lists outside Argentina miss entirely.
Claudio Caniggia, Roberto Ayala, Oscar Ruggeri, Walter Samuel and Diego Simeone fill out a squad that would be one of the deepest in the game. The gap isn’t candidates; it’s the work of rating 36 careers to the same standard as every other pool.
Frequently asked questions
Who is Argentina’s greatest player?
Maradona and Messi, and the honest answer is that the components split evenly. Messi wins on honours, Maradona on 1986.
Is Argentina playable in Vikto?
Not yet. Messi appears through the Barcelona pool at 99 and Di Stéfano through Real Madrid at 96.
Why isn’t Maradona in the game?
Because his card belongs to an Argentina pool, and pools ship complete — 36 legends across three positions — rather than one name at a time.
Where would Maradona rate?
At 98 or 99, Icon tier. The full breakdown is in Maradona vs Messi.
Does Di Stéfano count as Argentine?
He began internationally with Argentina and later played for Spain. His club card sits with Real Madrid, where the bulk of his career was played.
