What’s a football legends auction?

A football legends auction is a draft format where players don’t just pick legends one by one in turns — they bid on each one. The player willing to commit more of their budget wins the legend. It’s the auction format that auction fantasy leagues use, applied to a roster of all-time greats instead of current season players.

Vikto runs auctions in a unique blind format. You and your opponent submit your bids simultaneously without seeing each other’s offers. When both bids are in, they reveal. Highest wins the legend. This makes every bid a psychological gamble — you’re not just bidding against the legend’s value, you’re bidding against what you think your opponent is willing to pay.

How does the auction work step by step?

Step one: pick a club or nation and a position. Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, PSG, Marseille and Western Sydney Wanderers, plus Brazil, England, France and Germany — then attackers, midfielders or defenders. Most rosters hold 36 legends, twelve per position (Western Sydney is the one short pool, at 32), and a match is played on one position only.

Step two: six legends from that single-position pool are drawn for the match. You and your opponent see all six up front — names, eras and positions — but the base scores stay hidden until a card comes up for bid.

Step three: the first legend is up for bid, its score revealed the moment it arrives. You see your $250M budget. You type your bid — minimum $1M, passing isn’t allowed. Your opponent does the same. Both bids reveal simultaneously. Highest wins the legend.

Step four: repeat for each card. The remaining budget after winning a legend is yours to spend on the next ones.

Step five: once one player has won three legends, every remaining card goes to the opponent automatically and the match moves to the duel phase. Overspending early doesn’t just drain your budget — it hands them the rest of the deck.

Which legends can you actually bid on?

Because a match is played on one position, the pool that matters is the twelve cards at the position you picked. The scores reflect the legend’s prime — not their final season form.

Real Madrid’s attack runs Cristiano Ronaldo (98), Alfredo Di Stéfano (96), Ronaldo R9 (95), Ferenc Puskás (93) and Raúl (93). Its midfield is Zinedine Zidane (96), Luka Modrić (93) and Toni Kroos (92); its defence Sergio Ramos (94), Roberto Carlos (92) and Fernando Hierro (89).

Arsenal features Thierry Henry (96) and Dennis Bergkamp (92) up front, Patrick Vieira (92) and Cesc Fàbregas (87) in midfield, Tony Adams (93) and Ashley Cole (87) at the back.

PSG includes Kylian Mbappé (96), Zlatan Ibrahimović (94) and Edinson Cavani (92) in attack, Raí (93) and Marco Verratti (90) in midfield, Thiago Silva (93) and Marquinhos (92) in defence.

How do you win a legends auction?

The best bidders don’t just throw money at the biggest names. They read the situation.

A common observation across draft strategy discussions is that the player who wins the first card almost always overpays. The same applies in Vikto. Drop $80M on Zidane in round one and you might find yourself with $170M to cover five remaining legends — including potentially better-rated ones. Meanwhile your opponent paid $0 because they were happy to let you have him, and now they have $250M to dominate the next five cards.

Smart bidders think about the full match, not just the legend in front of them. They calculate which cards are worth committing budget to and which they can let go.

Open auctions favor whoever has the most patience. You keep raising until everyone else drops out. The deepest pocket wins. That’s not a game of skill, it’s a game of resources.

Blind auctions force commitment. You can’t react to your opponent’s bid in real time. You have to predict what they’ll do and bid accordingly. Bid too high — you overspend. Bid too low — you lose the legend. That’s the tension that makes Vikto compelling.

What about the duel phase?

First you name a captain — one of your three cards, +10% on its score. Then both squads are ranked by score and duelled off: your best card against their best, second against second, third against third.

Each duel uses the legend’s base score modified by the multipliers that land at resolution. Every match is set in a decade and at a venue: a legend whose era matches the match era scores 10% more, 15% if they’re an Icon, and a legend who fits the venue gets the same treatment. Nothing is random — the boosts are fixed, and you can work out which cards will get them.

This is the twist that stops Vikto from being purely a budget allocation puzzle. A 96-rated Henry with no boosts plays as a 96. Your opponent’s 92-rated Bergkamp, an Icon in both the match era and the venue, plays as 92 × 1.15 × 1.15 = 122. Smart bidders pick up the legends the match conditions favour instead of the biggest number on the board.

Best of three duels wins — the total across your three cards decides nothing.

What’s the maximum bid I can make?

You can bid your full remaining budget on any single card. There’s no per-card maximum — only what you have left to spend.

Can I bid zero?

Only if you’re out of money. The minimum bid is $1M and passing isn’t allowed, so every card costs you something.

What if both players bid the same amount?

Equal bids are settled by a server coin flip. The lower-budget rule applies to duels, not to the auction.

Do legends always have the same scores?

Base scores are fixed and based on the legend’s career. What changes match-to-match is which legends the era and venue boosts apply to.

Is there a captain mechanic?

Yes. Before the duels you designate one of your three legends as captain, worth +10% on that card’s score.
