Milan’s all-time list is the deepest defensive collection in football and one of the few that could reorder the top of a global ranking on its own — which is exactly what will happen when the pool lands.

Why Maldini leads
Because no defensive career in the sport’s history is longer or more decorated. Five European Cups, seven Serie A titles, and a range that covered left-back for a decade and then centre-back for another — two different positions played at the highest level available in each.
Baresi is the purer defensive argument and the closer call than outsiders assume: a sweeper whose reading of the game defined how Italian football taught the position for twenty years, and whose 1994 World Cup final is still the reference for playing through an injury.
Van Basten at three carries the weight of the shortest peak on this list. Three Ballons d’Or before an ankle ended it at 28, and a volley in a European Championship final that people who weren’t born then can describe.
Is Milan in Vikto?
No, and it’s the biggest gap in the game. There’s no Italian club pool and no Italy national pool, which means no Maldini, no Baresi, no Nesta, no Pirlo, no Rivera.
The effect shows up directly in the rankings. Who would be Icons?
Maldini, Baresi and Van Basten, without much argument. All three clear the standard Icon tier is meant to mark — players who’d make an all-time world XI rather than a club one — and all three are recognised well outside the club’s support.
Gullit and Rivera would sit just below as high Legends, with Kaká’s 2007 season the kind of single-year peak the community tends to reward when it votes.
Where the pool runs deep
Defence, obviously and overwhelmingly. Maldini, Baresi, Nesta, Costacurta, Cafu, Tassotti, Panucci, Thiago Silva and Serginho would make Milan DEF the strongest defensive deck in the game by a distance — a pool where the fourth-best card would beat most pools’ best.
Midfield is nearly as good and more balanced: Rivera, Rijkaard, Pirlo, Kaká, Seedorf, Gattuso, Ancelotti and Albertini. Attack is top-heavy — Van Basten, Gullit, Shevchenko, then a drop — which is the shape that rewards holding your budget rather than chasing the first big name that appears.
The names just outside
Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso, Alessandro Costacurta, Carlo Ancelotti and Demetrio Albertini would all make a 36-card pool without argument, and Marco Tassotti’s back four is the reference point for the position to this day.
