Franz Beckenbauer’s 96 is the highest defensive rating in Vikto, one point clear of Bobby Moore. Below that the list is tighter than any other position — nine cards between 91 and 93 — and it comes with the largest caveat in the game, because the pools that would reshape it aren’t in yet.

How the ratings work
Three components, 100 points.
Honours, 40 points. Trophies won, weighted by level — Beckenbauer’s World Cup as captain sits at the top of what this column can award.
Impact, 40 points. Position-normalised, which is the whole reason a defensive list is possible. Defenders are measured on the results of the teams they anchored and the length of time they anchored them, not on goals.
Iconicity, 20 points. Recognition beyond the club. This is where the top two separate from the rest: Beckenbauer and Moore are known to people who never saw either play.
Icons take a base-score boost plus the larger multipliers in duels, which matters at this position because the gaps are so small. A 92 Icon with an era match beats a 94 without one.

Why Beckenbauer leads
Because he invented the role the rating is measuring. Before Der Kaiser, a sweeper cleared the ball; after him, the position became the place a team started its attack from. Two Ballons d’Or from defence, a World Cup and a Euro as a player, another World Cup as a manager, three consecutive European Cups with Bayern.
Moore’s 95 is the closest thing to a pure defensive rating in the game — no Ballon d’Or, no European Cup, one World Cup won as captain, and the reputation of being the best defender Pelé said he ever faced. The system’s iconicity component is doing a lot of work there, and it should.
Ramos at 94 is the modern argument: four Champions Leagues, 671 games, and the header in the 93rd minute of a final that changed the club’s decade.
Who is missing
This is the position where the current pool list distorts the ranking most, and it’s worth being blunt about it.
There is no Italian pool, so there is no Paolo Maldini, no Franco Baresi, no Alessandro Nesta, no Fabio Cannavaro. Any all-time defensive list without Maldini isn’t a global list, and this one doesn’t claim to be — it’s a ranking of the defenders currently in the game.
The Netherlands would add Rijkaard and Koeman’s international careers. Liverpool would add Alan Hansen and Virgil van Dijk. Milan and Juventus are the two additions that would rewrite the top five, not just the bottom half.
Playing the defenders
Defensive matches are the most interesting to bid in, and it’s a direct consequence of these numbers. Attacking pools have a 99 and a 78 in the same deck; defensive pools run from about 93 down to the mid-70s with far less spread at the top.
That flattens the auction. When the best card is worth four points more than the third-best, paying double for it is a clear error — and since the moment you own three cards the rest of the deck goes to your opponent, the player who spends evenly usually walks away with the better squad. This is also the position where knowing the pool pays most: valuations diverge wildly on defenders, and the person who remembers who marked whom in a 1994 final has a real edge.

Why are full-backs and centre-backs in one list?
Vikto uses three positions, not eleven. All outfield defenders are rated against each other on position-normalised impact.
