How the ratings work
Three components, 100 points total.
Honours, 40 points. Ballons d’Or, Champions Leagues, league titles and international trophies, weighted by difficulty rather than count.
Impact, 40 points. Normalised by position, which matters more in midfield than anywhere else — a holding midfielder is measured on control and longevity, not goals, so Busquets and Keane aren’t punished for scoring nine times a decade.
Iconicity, 20 points. Recognition outside the club’s own support.
The position normalisation is why this list looks different to a goals-based one. Lampard scored more Premier League goals than any midfielder in the competition’s history and still rates below Keane, who scored a fraction as many — because the system measures each against what his role asked of him.

Why Zidane leads
The 97 is the France card, and it’s the only midfield rating in the game above 96. It rests on three Ballons d’Or, a World Cup won at home with two goals in the final, a Euro two years later, and the fact that the biggest moments of his career arrived on the biggest available stage.
His Real Madrid card is a 96 — one point lower, covering 2001–2006 rather than the full career. That gap is the honours column: the international trophies attach to the France card.
Xavi’s 96 ties Zidane’s Real Madrid card as the highest club-pool midfield rating, and it’s the strongest case in the game for a player whose value never showed up in a stat line at the time. Eight La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and a passing structure that a decade of opponents couldn’t press.

The position the ratings treat most carefully, because nothing it does shows up in a goal column. Vikto’s impact score is position-normalised, so a holding midfielder is measured on control and longevity instead.

Who is missing
The same holes as everywhere else, and midfield feels them most.
No Italy means no Pirlo, no Rivera, no Tardelli. No Netherlands means no Neeskens or Rijkaard. No Argentina means no Riquelme or Redondo’s international career. No Liverpool means Gerrard appears only as an 89 in the England pool, well below his club standing.

Playing the midfields
A match is one pool and one position, so a midfield match draws six of that pool’s twelve midfielders. The choice of pool changes the whole shape of the game: Barcelona MID means Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets are in the deck; France MID means Zidane and Platini; Manchester United MID is the deepest pool in the game, with four cards at 92 or above.
Depth matters more than the top card. In a pool where the sixth-best midfielder is an 85, the cheap cards are dangerous and the expensive ones are a trap — you need three cards, and the moment you have them the rest of the deck goes to your opponent for nothing.
