Best Left Backs of All Time — Ranked by Card
Roberto Carlos leads at 92, and the gap behind him is the widest at the top of any position in the game. Three Champions Leagues, a World Cup, and a left foot that produced the most replayed free kick in football. Marcelo and Ashley Cole follow at 89. Here’s the top twelve and the reasoning behind every number.
The top twelve left backs
| Score | Legend | Pool | Era |
|---|---|---|---|
| 92 | Roberto Carlos | Real Madrid | 1996–2007 |
| 89 | Ashley Cole | England | 2001–2014 |
| 89 | Marcelo | Real Madrid | 2007–2022 |
| 88 | Denis Irwin | Man United | 1990–2002 |
| 88 | Andreas Brehme | Germany | 1984–1994 |
| 87 | Bixente Lizarazu | France | 1992–2004 |
| 86 | Paul Breitner | Germany | 1971–1982 |
| 85 | Jordi Alba | Barcelona | 2012–2023 |
| 85 | Maxwell | PSG | 2012–2017 |
| 84 | Stuart Pearce | England | 1987–1999 |
| 83 | Éric Abidal | France | 2004–2013 |
| 83 | Nigel Winterburn | Arsenal | 1987–2000 |
Breitner is rated as a midfielder in the Germany pool, reflecting where the second half of his career was played — he scored in two World Cup finals, one from left back and one from midfield.
How the ratings work
Three components, 100 points, applied to every outfield player identically.
Honours, 40. Weighted by difficulty rather than count, which is why Roberto Carlos’s three Champions Leagues and a World Cup put him clear of a field where nobody else has both.
Impact, 40. Position-normalised, so a left back is measured on the attacking output the role demands as much as the defending. This is the component that rewards Marcelo, whose case is almost entirely about what he added going forward.
Recognition, 20. How far the name travels. It’s why Roberto Carlos’s 1997 free kick against France is worth real points: a single moment that made a full back famous to people who don’t watch football.

Why Roberto Carlos leads
Because he redefined what the position could be, and won everything while doing it. Three Champions Leagues with Real Madrid, four La Liga titles, the 2002 World Cup with Brazil, and 527 games for a club that changed its entire squad around him twice.
The free kick against France in 1997 — struck from 35 metres with the outside of the left foot, bending so far it left the pitch before returning — is the shorthand, and it undersells him. He played 11 seasons at the highest level as a full back who was genuinely a threat, which almost nobody before him had managed.
Ashley Cole’s 89 is the defensive counter-argument: the best pure defending left back of the Premier League era, and a player who never lost a duel to the wingers of his generation. Marcelo matches the score from the opposite direction — five Champions Leagues, and a defensive record his own managers worked around.
Who is missing
More than at any other position, and it’s the same gap as everywhere: no Italian pool.
Paolo Maldini spent a decade as the best left back in the world before moving inside, and his absence distorts this list more than any other single name. No Milan also means no Giacinto Facchetti, the man who invented the attacking full back a generation before Roberto Carlos.
The Netherlands would add Ruud Krol, Liverpool would add Alan Kennedy and Andy Robertson. Those pools are on the roadmap.
Bidding on a defender
This list runs from 92 down to 83 — nine points across twelve players, where an attacking pool spans twenty or more. Defensive matches are the flattest decks in the game and they reward patience the most.
If the best card costs you half your budget, you’ve paid a 60% premium for a 10% edge, and your opponent will assemble three solid cards while you assemble one great one and two weak ones. Win two duels out of three, not one duel by forty points.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the best left back of all time?
Vikto rates Roberto Carlos highest at 92, on three Champions Leagues, a World Cup and the attacking output that redefined the position.
Why isn’t Maldini on the list?
Milan isn’t a pool yet. He’s the biggest absence at this position and would contest the top spot.
Marcelo or Ashley Cole?
Level at 89, from opposite directions — Cole on defending, Marcelo on trophies and attacking contribution.
Are left backs rated against centre-backs?
Yes. Vikto uses three positions, with impact normalised so attacking output counts for a full back.
Can I pick a left back specifically?
No. A defensive match draws six of a pool’s twelve defenders, full backs and centre-backs together.
